Tony Abbott, Australia’s former Prime Minister writes in the Australian:
A full economic partnership between Britain and Australia — restoring the almost completely unrestricted commerce that we enjoyed for 150 years, and allowing Britons and Australians, once again, properly to experience each other’s wonderful countries and lives — would be about the best Christmas present our two countries could have.
Tony Abbott also has an interview with Iain Dale:
What about the future? Because we are told that trade deals take a huge amount of time to negotiate? Now, correct me if I’m wrong but I always tell my listeners well Australia, negotiated a deal with America within 15 months. Now if that’s possible than a British, Australian Trade Deal ought to be simple.Iain Dale
You’d think No Deal would be easier than between Britain and Australia, because we have a common history, a common language, a common culture and we have complimentary economies. The fact that British standards of living are comparable to Australian standards of living. British trade and professional qualifications are comparable to Australians means that that a Britain-Australia Free Trade Deal, that means the fully free movement of goods without tariffs and quotas, mutual recognition of standards and qualifications, freedom of movement of people for work, not welfare, at reasonable wages, so we aren’t undercutting local peoples pay. Frankly that’s a no brainer, you ought to virtually be able to do this virtually on one page and I reckon that if that’s not done by Christmas then there will be something gravely wrong between the British and Australian negotiation teams.Tony Abbott
So if we leave on the 31st of October, you think a trade deal can be done by Christmas?Iain Dale
Absolutely and frankly, apart from the fact that negotiators on both sides have been too timidly acquiescent on the EU rules, um but for that timidity, we should have one to go on the 31st of OctoberTony Abbott
Tony Abbott there, a really interesting guy actually. That would be a nice Christmas present wouldn’t it, a free trade deal with Australia.Iain Dale
